Rooted in Houston 

For EMERGE scholar Marlee Morgan, graduating from the University of Virginia was not the end of her journey. It was one chapter in a path shaped by resilience, community, and sustained support.

A proud graduate of Westbury High School in Houston ISD, Marlee joined EMERGE in 2019 with a dream of attending college out of state. Her mentors, peers and program manager helped her navigate applications, financial aid and the decision to attend UVA, one of the nation’s top institutions.

 A Moment That Changed Everything

As a student navigating college without prior family experience, Marlee faced the challenge of adjusting to a new academic and social environment far from home. But nothing could have prepared her for what happened during her sophomore year. 

In 2022, Marlee was injured in a tragic campus shooting that claimed the lives of three of her classmates. 

“I’m still healing, but I refuse to let that moment define me,” Marlee shared. “Through it all, EMERGE was there, checking in, cheering me on and reminding me that I wasn’t alone.” 

During this time, EMERGE staff stayed closely connected to Marlee and her family, providing emotional support and helping ensure she had the resources needed to continue her studies safely.

Supported beyond college

EMERGE’s support didn’t end at college acceptance or even at graduation. 

Back home in Houston, Marlee was connected with a meaningful internship where she met Matt Rowland, an EMERGE supporter and mentor who helped her imagine new possibilities for her career. 

She also built a lasting connection with UVA alumna and EMERGE supporter Liz Stepanian, whose encouragement helped Marlee persist through difficult moments and stay grounded in her goals. 

“These connections are a testament to how deeply EMERGE invests in students,” Marlee said. “Not just academically, but personally and professionally too.” 

Looking ahead 

This summer, Marlee is beginning her master’s program at Syracuse University while interning in the athletic department. Her dream is to become a digital media producer and editor. Thanks to years of support and her own resilience, she’s well on her way. She plans to bring her skills and experience back to Houston, contributing to the same community that supported her journey.

EMERGE has also inspired Marlee to give back. She hopes to launch her own nonprofit next summer, dedicated to expanding access to mentorship and resources for women navigating barriers to higher education.
