Nearly 200 supporters from across Houston’s philanthropic, civic and business community gathered on Thursday, November 13, at the Greater Houston Sports Club for the sixth annual EMERGE Sporting Clays Tournament, celebrating a day of spirited competition and transformational impact. The tournament raised more than $550,000, making it the most successful tournament in EMERGE’s history and helping fuel life-changing college access opportunities for high-achieving students from low-income communities.
The event was chaired by Christy and Matt Rowland, longtime champions of EMERGE’s mission. Guests arrived to a crisp fall afternoon that set the perfect backdrop for team camaraderie, friendly rivalry and meaningful conversations about EMERGE Scholars and their futures.
A Day of Connection, Purpose and Celebration
Teams checked in early, greeted by EMERGE staff, warm hospitality and a lineup of engaging activities that went far beyond the traditional sporting clays experience. Guests enjoyed lunch sponsored by George’s Bistro, dinner provided by Third Coast Senior Management, live music sponsored by Armadillo Litigation Funding, and a welcoming pavilion atmosphere that encouraged connection across the village of supporters
Inside the event pavilion, a curated selection of luxury auction items generated enthusiastic bidding. Supporters vied for exclusive travel opportunities, wine experiences and sought-after packages, including a luxury cabin stay in Crested Butte, a dove-hunting experience in Córdoba, a Napa Valley wine retreat and a premier golf outing at Whispering Pines Golf Club. Each winning bid helped advance EMERGE’s mission and deepen its impact across Houston.
The competition concluded with awards for top performers. Johnson Law Group earned first place, represented by team members Basil Adams, Drake Davis and Trevor Shannahan. Paul Hastings LLP secured second place with David Elder, James Baker, Brian Rouche and Jonathan Cooper. Alamo Title placed third with team members David Alexander, Bob Heard, Charles Arledge and Brandon Wuntch. The Top Female Shooter was Erin Webb and the Top Male Shooter was David Alexander. ApexOne Investment Partners, represented by Nick Vaccari, Dylan Boudreaux, Brett Besselman and John Reyna, won the Top Flurry Team.
Why This Tournament Matters
Beyond the fun and festivities, the EMERGE Sporting Clays Tournament highlights a shared belief in expanding college access and economic mobility throughout Houston. EMERGE CEO Ashley Cash addressed supporters during the afternoon program, sharing the profound difference the village makes in the lives of EMERGE Scholars.
“This tournament is about more than clay targets,” Cash said. “It is about ensuring every talented student in Houston has the same shot at transformational college and career opportunities. Every clay broken today helps build a student’s future.”
EMERGE works with high-achieving students beginning in the 10th grade, guiding them through the college application process and supporting them through graduation. The organization’s outcomes speak to the power of this work:
- 99 percent of EMERGE Scholars are accepted to selective colleges
- 94 percent enroll in four-year universities
- 84 percent graduate, compared to 16 percent of similar students nationally
