August marked a powerful season of beginnings at EMERGE. For the Class of 2027, it was the start of a life-changing journey through the EMERGE program. For the Class of 2026, it was the final stretch toward college decisions and financial aid milestones.
Across Houston, both groups gathered with families and program managers for New Student Orientation and Senior Open House, two cornerstone events that frame the year with connection, accountability and confidence.
New Student Orientation: Finding Their “Why”
At New Student Orientation, new juniors stepped into a space designed to help them find their purpose, or what EMERGE calls their “Why.” Together with their families, students learned about the selective college pathway and how EMERGE equips them to thrive academically, socially and financially once they get there.
“Because I was a high-performing student who had to navigate everything on my own, I’m passionate about making sure no one else has to do that,” said Robin Brumfield, 11th-grade director of district strategy. “I was you when I was in high school. However, I did not have EMERGE.”
Families also reflected on their hopes and fears. In one exercise, parents stood in solidarity as they admitted nervousness about their child leaving home. “You are not alone,” Brumfield reminded them. “Look around. There are others who feel the same way.”
By the end of the day, every scholar had met their program manager, logged into the new EMERGE Student Portal and gained a clearer understanding of what it takes to pursue and persist through a selective college experience.
Senior Open House: Grounded, Focused and Ready
Just a week later, returning seniors and their families reunited for Open House, an event that helps students refocus after summer break and prepares them for the demanding early-application season ahead.
“The purpose of tonight is to revisit early strategies, such as Early Decision and Early Action, and help students and families understand the urgency of senior year,” said Gladis Rodriguez, 12th-grade program manager. “We also want them to get comfortable using the new EMERGE platform, which serves as their one-stop shop for college applications, research and communication with their program manager.”
The evening included breakout sessions for parents, where staff members emphasized key deadlines and offered encouragement. “Half the battle in life is showing up,” said Roaul Channer, director of district strategy. “We have incredible opportunities lined up for your students, but they have to be present to receive them.”
Program managers such as DJ Johnson and Andrea Pedraza echoed the same message of support. “I work at EMERGE because I want to be the person I needed when I was in your shoes,” Johnson said. “I navigated the college process alone, and I know how hard that can be.”
A Shared Foundation
Though the two events serve different cohorts, both represent EMERGE’s commitment to walking alongside students at every step, from discovery to decision. Each scholar, whether just starting or preparing to graduate, is equipped with the same guiding principles: know your purpose, trust the process and stay connected to the people and tools designed to help you succeed.
As Brumfield put it, “Our scholars got to learn about their academic profile, why selective colleges matter and why EMERGE exists. The goal is to ensure they have the support, guidance and confidence to reach their goals.”
This August kickoff underscored what EMERGE stands for: empowering Houston’s high-achieving students from underserved communities to access selective colleges and build transformational careers. With the year underway, every scholar now carries that mission forward, guided by their own “Why.”
